Romain Bardet entered the 16th stage of the
Tour de France in fourth place, however was perhaps the rider who lost more on the day as a bad day caused him to come all the way down into ninth place.
“At the moment I can’t really explain what happened, it was one of my worst days I’ve ever had on the bike,” Bardet said in a post-race interview. “This morning I felt good but in the end I don’t know what happened". With most GC riders withstanding the day after a rest day quite well, the anomaly was the Frenchman who suffered in the day's climbs and sustained heavy losses which have put a big dent into his chances of fighting for the podium, even the Top5.
Having been dropped in the Mur de Péguère, he had a bad outcome to the day. Although he had the support of Chris Hamilton and Andreas Leknessund who managed to heavily limit the losses in the final descent and run-in to the line, he still lost 3:36 minutes to the yellow jersey group - and a little less to some other rivals such as Adam Yates and Louis Meintjes. He now sits ninth in the GC, 2:13 minutes behind fifth place David Gaudu.
"I hope the good feeling will come back and it was just an off day. I want to say a big thanks to all the guys for their support on the road and for their encouragement in the car – it really helped me to get through it," he concluded.
