As
Alessandro Covi stormed to the win at the Volta a Andalucia, behind a lot of battled emerged, specially as
Miguel Ángel López and
Gonzalo Serrano collided at the entrance of the final cobbled sector at Alcalá La Real.
The Colombian finished the stage second, whilst Serrano cracked and fell down to 12th place in the final few meters. Across social media a lot of debate has been stirred up from this move as López appeared to have elbowed his former teammate, after Serrano unintentionally drove López into the barriers. With context though it was an understandable event, as the roads were very narrow and the transition to the cobbles was incredibly steep which almost saw some riders on a standstill as they entered the road, which had just around 50 meters.
“Well, it was a good try and I am happy with the legs I had today. I missed just a little to catch Alessandro Covi in the final. Also, I lost some energy earlier in the stage, chasing the peloton after my crash," López said after the finish.
With 27 kilometers to go López hit the deck, but managed to regain position in the peloton and showed himself very lively at the hilltop finish. He now lies in third position in the overall classification and with the lack of bonifications he is only eigth seconds behind race leader Alessandro Covi, and still has two stages where he can realistically attack the Italian's lead.
