Richard Carapaz was the man who attacked in the fifth stage of the Dauphiné Criterium and ended up causing Jonas Vingegaard to go solo for victory and the lead of the event. The Ecuadorian made him want, but not force, and he ended up losing a lot of time after his attack.
He acknowledged after the stage that he still lacks the strength to be at his peak of form. "It has been a very fast stage, we wanted to try it, we are left with having tried it, in the end the strongest has won, we still have one more point to improve and we will go little by little."
About his form ahead of the Tour de France, the Ecuadorian, EF Education-EasyPost rider feels calm. "There's still almost a month left. I still can't draw a good conclusion, I want to finish the Dauphiné well and see what we have left to work on. I think we have a lot ahead of us and a lot to gain."
He was asked again about his feelings after Vingegaard's attack that left him completely out of gas: "In the end I couldn't keep up, I got a little drowned and I let myself go and nothing, I think I made the effort, the I tried and couldn't."
