Remco Evenepoel ends 2022 with another award - Named Belgian of the Year

In what has been an incredibly successful year for Remco Evenepoel, the Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl Team rider has capped off his 2022 by being named Belgian of the Year at the annual awards ceremony.

“This is really very special,” Evenepoel reacted after being voted by the viewers and readers of HLN and VTM as the most influential Belgian in the year of 2022. With the other nominees being Camille (artist), the volunteers for Ukraine, Stromae (artist) and Dirk De Wachter (psychiatrist), Evenepoel was a comfortable winner with a big lead once all the votes had been counted up.

His brilliant 2022 includes highlights such as a maiden Grand Tour victory as Evenepoel won the Red Jersey at the Vuelta a Espana in September and becoming Road Race World Champion after beating off competition from the likes of Christophe Laporte and Michael Matthews in Wollongong.

“I actually think this is very special,” Evenepoel told VTM. “Becoming Belgian of the Year is great, I am proud to be Belgian. To be the number one in your country then is really special. It is a story of literally and figuratively sitting very deep to where I am now. It is about mentality, resilience and perseverance.”
