Pieter Weening acquitted of threats and assault by the court

Pieter Weening was sentenced last year to 80 hours of community service for threatening his ex-girlfriend and assaulting her brother. However, the Dutchman appealed the verdict and was acquitted on Wednesday by the court in Leeuwarden. This was reported by Algemeen Dagblad.

The incident took place on Christmas Day 2021. Weening was visiting his now ex-in-laws at home in Kootstertille that day. After a heated discussion, Weening's then brother-in-law lashed out at the former rider and broke Weening's both jaws with a punch. Weening then ran after his brother-in-law over chairs and benches, threatening to stab everyone in the meantime. He called his sister and 112.

According to officers, no conversation was possible with Weening at that time. They had to hold him back. His sister, who had now arrived on the scene, and brother-in-law then took Weening to the hospital. When he returned, he found that his then girlfriend was still there and his brother-in-law came after him. Weening 'armed' himself with a bottle. "I defended myself against more harm," is his explanation. "I felt extremely threatened in my own home."

The court now rules that the situation for Weening in his own home was indeed threatening. He was therefore acquitted of threats and assault and will therefore not receive any community service.
