João Almeida has completed an incredible comeback at the 2025
Tour de Suisse. From losing more than three minutes on stage 1, a dominant final stage time trial has seen the Portuguese
UAE Team Emirates - XRG leader seal the general classification victory.
With the time trial being split into different sections, the first block of riders saw
Harry Sweeny of EF Education-EasyPost set the fastest time with his effort of 29:28, 33 seconds quicker than Pello Bilbao, with Antonio Morgado third after the first lot of riders at 47 seconds down on Sweeny.
As the group of those higher up on GC started their efforts, it was expected that Sweeny would be soon under threat. The Aussie's time was lasting well though, with INEOS Grenadiers' AJ August coming closest 29 seconds down. Aleksandr Vlasov also threatened Sweeny's time, but just finished slower by 9 seconds at the line.
Ben O'Connor finished 12 seconds down on his compatriot, as Sweeny continued to look comfortable in the hotseat. Finally though, Sweeny was unseated by O'Connor's former teammate
Felix Gall who destroyed the course to set a new fastest time by a massive 1:27, making the new time to beat 27:58.
Oscar Onley then boosted his hopes of a podium finish with a strong performance, 47 seconds down on Gall. The race win though, was looking more and more likely to end up with João Almeida. The Portuguese star ended up with a time of 27:33. Not only good enough to overtake Gall in terms of the stage win, but also enough to overcome
Kevin Vauquelin the GC and take the overall victory.
Top 5 GC rider in the world, 3rd or 4th or 5th... depending on different variables. The main variable is the function he must perform within the team (domestique, captain or co-captain). IMHO, last year, If he had been captain of a good team, he would have been Tour de France third. Very good climber, very good TTlist and excellent behavior: He is calm, serene, resilient and, if necessary, does not hesitate to command.
I don’t think he’d beat a crashless Rogliç and he’d probably have a tough time with some youngsters too
Best climber errr no Vin and Pog would leave him in the dust. No disrespect but the tour de suisse was like a b class movie no big hitters really .Most of the riders are the supporting acts for the TDF
Good on Almeida, he worked hard this week win this race.
Best climber in the world? Anything for clicks i guess.
Why would Almeida suddenly be the best climber in the world, as the title suggests? Because he climbed a hill faster than Felix Gall? Or because he won a one-week race?
Almeida's climbing ability has been a running theme online amongst cycling fans recently, since the well known X account 'Mou' called him the best in the world. This just plays up to that I guess
