In recent memory, it's barely ever been seen the complete and utter dominance of
Tadej Pogacar at the 2024
Giro d'Italia. After his first Grand Tour win in nearly three years was confirmed following stage 21 in Rome, the Slovenian took a moment to reflect on his last three weeks.
“I am speechless. It is difficult to describe this moment. It's a great feeling,” began the
UAE Team Emirates leader in his post-stage interview, having ended the general classification of the 2024 Giro d'Italia almost 10 minutes clear of second-placed Daniel Martinez. En route, Pogacar also bagged himself six stage wins and held the Maglia Rosa from his stage 2 victory all the way until the end of the race.
Even in the finale of the final stage Pogacar couldn't help himself from getting in the mix as he entered the final 2 kilometres on the front of the peloton attempting to help the leadout of his sprint teammate, Juan Sebastian Molano. "We wanted to sit in the front. It was a quite technical final. We did very well, but it was a shame that we couldn't win with Molano," he assesses of the team's efforts in the finale. "Oh well, we can't win everything, so we're definitely happy.”
Nevertheless, the lack of a stage win for his teammate in Rome can not take anything away from the beauty of what has been three weeks of pure and utter domination for the Tadej Pogacar at the opening Grand Tour of the year. But what, if any moment stood out above the rest for the Slovenian over the past three weeks of racing?
“It's difficult for me to say, because there are many wonderful memories. I might be able to answer this better in a while. Overall it was a beautiful Giro d'Italia," he concludes honestly. "The pink jersey is very special. It was a great experience and the fans were great.”
