As you might expect, such an outburst quickly went viral on social media. Hoping to get some answers as to why Buchmann was ultimately snubbed, Eurosport.de have followed up with BORA - hansgrohe and quizzed them about the German's frustrations.
"Our strategy for the Giro d'Italia has changed radically in the last four weeks," a BORA - hansgrohe spokesperson responded to Eurosport. "Until then, it was clear that we would be travelling to Turin with Daniel Martinez and
Lennard Kämna as co-leaders. Our support team was heavily focussed on the mountains. After Lennard's serious accident, we were forced to reorganise ourselves. We now only have one leader for the classification and several versatile riders as back-up, who are looking for opportunities themselves on undulating terrain."
In Buchmann's absence, the likes of Florian Lipowitz, Max Schachmann and Jonas Koch will be in support of the aforementioned Martinez and with sprint star Sam Welsford also not making the cut, BORA - hansgrohe will go with a sprint train led by Danny van Poppel.
