Jumbo-Visma stole the show on the first day of the
Tour of Britain.
Wout van Aert started the sprint ahead of
Olav Kooij, who then easily grabbed the victory. Van Aert even finished second.
"The whole team made a good effort," Kooij is satisfied afterwards. "It was quite difficult to catch the escapees back. That was already quite an effort. Nevertheless, the guys managed to get me and Wout through the last corner first and second. After that I just had to go all the way to the finish. The fact that everyone was so involved makes the victory even more beautiful."
Kooij has words of praise about Van Aert as a lead-out. "He's one of the best cyclists in the world. To have him as a lead-out gives a lot of confidence. You can trust that it will work out. It's great to have him here."
Prior to the Tour of Britain, Van Aert already indicated in an interview that he did not provide a lead-out that often in his career. "That's new to me, different from sprinting myself. I do have some experience in bunch sprints, so I know how hectic it can be. Hopefully I can do well and drop Olav in a good position," he said.
