The 2023 Vuelta a Espana has reached its first rest day and this chaotic edition of the Spanish Grand Tour continued in the same vein on stage 9 with crosswinds and mud both having a hand in the drama.
The racing had barely even begun when Jumbo-Visma went on the attack, using the winds to their advantage and creating echelons early on. Once it had calmed down ever so slightly, Lennard Kamna was the standout rider in an eight-man breakaway. Before the riders could reach the final climb of the day however, race organisers were forced to make an adaption and call time on the riders at 2.05km to go due to mudslides.
