Matteo Sobrero has to settle for second place in the ninth stage of the Vuelta a España. The Italian from Jayco-AlUla could not match Lennard Kämna's acceleration on the steepest ramps of difficult final climb.
"I tried my best. It was a really hectic day. We had echelons at the beginning, which was very stressful. After that we were allowed to ride away on the first climb. I looked to see who was there and immediately saw Lennard Kämna. I knew he was going to be the strongest at this finish," Sobrero tells Eurosport after the stage.
The versatile rider therefore chose Kämna's wheel, but was unable to follow the German when he attacked. "I felt good at the end, but couldn't compete. However, I wasn't that far and kept riding around at the same distance. Unfortunately I couldn't get back to him. The form is good, that's nice. The end of Vuelta is still two weeks away."
