Although Nairo Quintana has bounced back from being tarnished with allegations of doping by securing a contract with Movistar Team, fallout from the controversy continues to effect the Colombian.
As mentioned, Quintana was unable to regain employment for the 2023 campaign after seeing his Arkea-Samsic deal brought to an end by a positive tramadol test at the 2022 Tour de France. Now, the diminutive Colombian's doctor, Fredy Alexander Gonzáles Torres is set to appear in court to address his connection to a separate doping case involving Quintana, dating back to the 2020 Tour and may face jail time if found guilty.
“It has been decided to prosecute the Colombian doctor,” authorities say in reports by French-based outlet, AFP. The doctor is suspected by prosecutors of “possession of a substance or method prohibited for sporting use without medical justification.”
Quintana's Movistar Team return gets underway in earnest today at the Tour Colombia in his homeland and this is surely the last thing he needed.
