Movistar Team have signed their best sprinter in years - Gaviria will "Try and contest as many race wins as possible"

The transfer season has not yet slowed down deep into October, and Movistar Team have today confirmed three signings that they had worked through the last few weeks. The final, and perhaps most important, is that of Fernando Gaviria who will bring the team back into contention in the flat races.

The transfer had been guaranteed already by several sources over the past few weeks, and it has today been revealed. As Alejandro Valverde hangs up his wheels, the Spanish team has freed up some budget which they are using to look into other terrains other then the mountains where Enric Mas will be leading and Ruben Guerreiro will already be reinforcing.

“It’s a new challenge, both for me personally and surely for the team as a whole," Gaviria said in a press release. "Having them trust me as a sprinter gives me extra motivation, because I want to represent well this organisation, with its stature, its history, all big legends that have raced for it. It makes me happy to have that challenge ahead for next year."

After his discontent in UAE Team Emirates and it's continuous bet on the climbers and classics riders, Gaviria's leave was certain. He's won only at the Tour of Oman throughout the 2022 season, and will enter a team that features the likes of Max Kanter and Iván García Cortina as top sprinters. Gaviria has signed a one-year deal with the Spanish outfit.

"The main thing for 2023 is to try and fit the best into the team — I’m really looking forward to meeting all team-mates and seek for the best way to become a strong group alongside them, to try and contest as many race wins as possible," he concluded.
