Ruben Guerreiro had a contract with EF Education-EasyPost that could see him stay with the team longer, but over the few months negotiations had left the Portuguese in a position where he was free to leave the team. Movistar Team was one of the squads looking to net the Portuguese climber, and they have gotten their fish.
Guerreiro is a climber and hilly classics specialist that has came up the ranks as many of his compatriots, via the Hagens Bermans Axeon team. Stints at the old Katusha team, Trek - Segafredo and now EF Education-EasyPost have seen him show his talent riding uphill, and he has shown in the last few years several high-level results that have put him on the radar as a priority to some teams.

Having won a stage and the KOM classification at the 2020 Giro d'Italia was a strong indicator, this year he has also won the Mont Ventoux Dénivelé Challenge, and has finished in the Top10 of the Critérium du Dauphiné, sixth at the Vuelta a Burgos and third at the Deutschland Tour. He's signed with Movistar for three seasons where he will meet with compatriot Nelson Oliveira.
With the departure of Alejandro Valverde, the team is having some budget to use on other strong riders to fill in the space. Today the Spanish team is revealing three of it's signings, with Iván Romeo being one of them, and Fernando Gaviria expected to be the third and final to be announced later this afternoon.
