Tadej Pogacar can exhale almost fully at this point in the Tour de France as he has survived the final competitive stage of the Tour de France. Certainly, bad luck could still hit him on stage 21, but certainly the organizers will take action if something big happens to the top riders. The UAE Team Emirates - XRG rider doesn't look to just save the day in Paris but could potentially aim for a stage win as well.
Today on the 20th day of the race there was a lot of race and a fast-paced start which absolutely made it a difficult task for everyone in the peloton, but Pogacar was not tested by Jonas Vingegaard and so as soon as the breakaway went up the road, UAE could enjoy a calm day in the peloton - something that has been a rarity throughout the entire race.
Pogacar has virtually won the Tour, his fourth, but of course the race is not finished yet and after crossing the finish line in Pontarlier he delivered some words of caution. "Until we cross the finish line in Paris I have to stay focused with the team. I hope tomorrow will be a calm day," Pogacar said in a post-race interview.
"We have a good team for tomorrow's final stage. It's not a classic, it's a very short circuit, but we have Nils, Tim, Jhonatan and myself. We can try something on that stage. We'll see how we feel and how the first lap of the circuit unfolds".
With the explosive final circuit in Montmarte however UAE can certainly play a role in the fight for the stage win. Pogacar's domestique in their own right would have strong chances of doing so if they are given the freedom, but winning in Paris with the yellow jersey is something that may never be possible again for the Slovenian.
It should be a tense finale so fighting for positioning is likely to occur either ways, but on thee cobbled climb it is possible to make the difference and the finale makes it hard to chase any rider that stays up front. It will not come as a surprise if we see the yellow jersey giving it one final go before finally having his much-deserved rest away from the bike.
