After his accident in late March, Max Walscheid was lucky to escape any serious injury however was left out of the classics period which he had been preparing for. Now back on the bike, Walscheid is eyeing a return to the peloton in the coming month.
"The accident was a shock, just like what the doctors diagnosed with my lungs. Nevertheless, I have always been very motivated to return to competition and regain my best physical condition as soon as possible;" Walscheid said in a team press release. The German was having a very strong start to the season which included a win at the GP de Denain, but was hit by a car just over two weeks ago which caused him several bruises and he had to be transported to intensive care.
With his recovery process well outlined and executed, the Cofidis rider has been able to return to the bike in the meantime: "Of course, my first outing on the road since the accident was not very pleasant, but mentally it is also getting better and better. I'm not worried about regaining all my feelings in the race."
The team has said they expect Walscheid will be able to return to competition in May, where he will likely be preparing a return to the Tour de France: "I will not participate in Paris-Roubaix and I knew it from the accident that it would take time to recover properly. I'm bound to be disappointed but I know I can't change anything. The main thing now is to leave behind the accident, its memory and its consequences to bounce back as quickly as possible."
