For most teams, having the second and third-placed riders in the general classification at the Tour de France after 16 stages would signify a good race. UAE Team Emirates however, came to win, with Mauro Gianetti hinting Adam Yates' position could be sacrificed to help Tadej Pogacar.
"The difference is big, we know that," the 59-year-old Swiss told TV2. "We know Jonas Vingegaard by now, after he has done very well in the Tour de France two years in a row. Of course, we are still here to win, but we have to be realistic. We're going to fight, but we need good legs."
So just how do UAE Team Emirates plan on going about overturning the 1:48 deficit to Vingegaard that Pogacar now has in the general classification? "We have riders in second and third place," says Gianetti although Yates in third is nearly nine minutes off the Maillot Jaune. "If there's an opportunity where we can take the yellow by sacrificing Adam, why not? But a lot has to happen before that scenario becomes relevant."
Speaking to ITV Sport following the conclusion of the stage 16 time-trial, Yates himself eluded to the fact that his podium place was almost irrelevant without his team leader being the one on the top step. "The main objective is to take yellow in Paris with Tadej, if I'm on the podium, I'm on the podium," the Brit told Daniel Friebe.
