The Giro d'Italia will have more teams within a chance of getting a wildcard for the race as one of the automatic invitees, Lotto Dstny, has decided not to make the journey to Italy once again.
This is reported by Het Nieuwsblad. The Belgian team has made the decision not to race the Giro in 2023 despite having the automatic wildcard, as it was the ProTeam that scored the most UCI points throughout the 2022 season - when it was still in the World Tour. In 2023, it was again a big scorer, and earned automatic wildcards for all World Tour events. It voluntarily pulls out of the Corsa Rosa.
This is because they seek UCI points, and have figured that even with the changes in the points system, it will not be worthy a return. The team does not have with it big GC contenders and without Caleb Ewan, also does not have a plethora of sprinters which could see them aim for victories throughout the three weeks.
The team has held tight to Arnaud De Lie as their absolute leader, and a lot of the team's strengths lie in the classics and one-day races. It will then try to use the riders in more efficient ways.
