Lidl-Trek's Daan Hoole has powered to a surprise stage 10 individual time trial win at the 2025 Giro d'Italia. In terms of the GC fight, Primoz Roglic gained time back on all his rivals.
The first stage after a rest day can also be a testy one for the peloton as riders react to their day off in different ways. Of the early starters in this time trial, the rider who seemed to have recovered the best was the Australian Michael Hepburn of Team Jayco AlUla, clocking 33:20 for his efforts. Although Hepburn lasted a little while in the hotseat, he was soon comfortably beaten by Soudal - Quick-Step's Ethan Hayter (32:40).
European champion against the clock, Edoardo Affini, could not beat Hayter's time, crossing the line 14 seconds slower. Hayter was beaten moments later though, as Daan Hoole improved on the Brit's time by 10 seconds to move into the hotseat himself.
The next rider to get close to the fastest times of the day was Soudal - Quick-Step's Mattia Cattaneo. The Italian crossed the line with the provisional 4th fastest time, just 23 seconds down on Hoole.
When the likes of Primoz Roglic, Egan Bernal and the Yates brothers were out on course, the weather changed, and the rain began to fall on the riders. By the time Roglic reached the finishing line, the Slovenian was riding in heavy rain. As such, his time of 33:45, losing more than a minute to Daan Hoole, wasn't a massive surprise.
Despite the big time loss to Hoole, Roglic was actually gaining time on almost all of his GC rivals. Juan Ayuso however, was riding like a man possessed, unhindered by the wet conditions. So good was the Spaniard that he was actually threatening to take the Maglia Rosa off his teammate, Isaac del Toro. By the time he crossed the line though, Ayuso had lost time to Roglic, 1:34 down on Hoole, giving Del Toro more than enough leeway to keep the race lead.
