Another day, another victory.
Tadej Pogacar has won stage 7 of the
Criterium du Dauphiné after a solo attack on the climb to Valmeinier 1800. The World Champion was not as dominant as the previous day, but still managed to take a relatively comfortable victory after another long-range attack.
The stage was quite short but included three climbs that were all very long and where damage could be done. 16 riders created the breakaway of the day, although on the first climb Visma went all-out to try and create damage and put Pogacar under pressure, having Matteo Jorgenson on the attack but with response from UAE and Pogacar.
Romain Bardet, Santiago Buitrago, Valentin Paret-Peintre and Iván Romeo were amongst those who formed the very strong front group, but with a gap that was always small, much due to Visma's work then on the Col de la Croix de Fer.
There, the attack came again from Jorgenson but Pogacar responded, and a small GC group followed over the top. There was some regrouping when it came to the GC contenders, whilst in front Romain Bardet went solo off the front in the descent and became the one leader of the race for quite a while.
At the start of the final climb it was actually Decathlon who brought back Bardet, with Sepp Kuss attacking right after. However UAE accelerated with Pavel Sivakov and with 11.5 kilometers Tadej Pogacar attacked, quickly going solo.
Jonas Vingegaard was briefly close to shutting down the gap but this then changed around and it began to expand soon after.
In terms of action, the race ended there virtually. Pogacar won the stage, seemingly calming down inside the final kilometer which allowed Jonas Vingegaard to finish 14 seconds behind.
Florian Lipowitz finished third, over a minute behind, but with another stellar ride to cement his spot on the podium.
"not as dominant"... he rode to the gap that much was evident definately eased in the last few hundred metres. Jonas looked like he buried himself to only drop 14 sec on the road
I was thinking the same. Jonas looked totally spent, face ashen. Tadej looked like he was on a group coffee ride. And Tadej said he didn’t even have to go deep.
