Could a bit of monumental cycling history be about to play out?
Jumbo-Visma and
Soudal - Quick-Step, two of the most successful teams of the modern era could be on the verge of merging.
According to a report by Wielerflits, various sources have revealed that a deal being struck between the two teams is very close to being finalised. This deal would see Jumbo-Visma's
Richard Plugge and Merijn Zeeman as CEO and Head Coach with Soudal - Quick-Step's
Patrick Lefevere on the board.
It is believed this new 'SuperTeam' will go under the name Visma-Soudal or Soudal-Visma and will likely have a more than big enough budget to continue competing at the very top level of World Tour cycling.
Jumbo-Visma currently employs 27 riders and with Soudal Quick-Step having 23 riders under contract for 2024 it remains to be seen how all this playing out will affect the riders involved. With the likes of
Primoz Roglic,
Jonas Vingegaard,
Sepp Kuss and
Remco Evenepoel all on the same team, their Grand Tour domiance will surely only continue.
Jumbo needs more GC contenders!
TJV is already a super team; what Quickstep brings is a) sponsorship, and b) Remco. Asgreen, Landa, and a few others could contribute, but Alaphilippe is no longer a top rider, Jacobsen appears to be fading, and many of the old stalwarts (Declerq, Morkov, etc) are gone. So it seems to me that this las less to do with building a super team than giving TJV the sponsorship it needs and salvaging a few last years for Lefevere.
If so they will offload Roglic and Remco
There is ZERO chance they offload Remco. Primoz is a different matter, although I suspect they wouldn't "offload" him so much as let him find a new deal for himself. But Remco and Jonas are the top dogs on the new team (if it happens), and everyone else gets fit in around them.
This sounds like an absolute disaster in the making.
Wait, it's not April 1st yet is it ?
