Following Danny van Poppel, Jenthe Biermans and Benjamin Thomas out of the race, Julius van den Berg has become the fourth rider to abandon the 2024 Giro d'Italia on the day of stage 16.
"After battling through the mountains the other day, Julius van den Berg unfortunately hasn't recovered fully from his sickness and has stepped off the bike during today's Giro d'Italia stage," reveals an official announcement by the Team DSM-Firmenich PostNL's social media pages. "Rest up and recover, Julius!"
With the horrific weather conditions, it's no surprise that anyone not feeling their best has been forced to withdraw from the race. The stage was at a standstill ahead of the flag drop with riders being held at a petrol station in the cold, wet sleet whilst the CPA and RCS hashed out a plan for an amended stage due to the adverse weather.
Eventually, after much discussion and controversy, the stage was adjusted with the opening climbs and descents withdrawn and the peloton instead facing only the remaining 120km. Nevertheless, the rain and col has remained unrelenting, giving the riders zero respite from the weather.
