Julian Alaphilippe is known to ride around the back of the peloton over the start of the classics and today was no exception. However that proved deadly for the Frenchman's chances of winning the World Championships today where he crashed out in the opening kilometers.
It was a crash that happened with 218 kilometers, involving Pello Bilbao and João Almeida. Almeida resumed quickly, Bilbao shortly after, whilst Alaphilippe was not actually on camera he also went down and has abandoned the race as a result.
