The undisputed top dog of Grand Tour cycling in recent years, Jonas Vingegaard is expected to once again be front and centre in the battle for the Maillot Jaune at the 2024 Tour de France.
Although the year 2024 may still be in its very early stages, Team Visma | Lease a Bike have already been impressed by the levels shown by the Dane so far. "He is doing very well during the training camp," says sports director Frans Maassen in conversation with Ekstra Bladet. “He is in good form and we are happy with what we have seen. We have now sent the boys who will be at altitude for three weeks in February home a little earlier, so that they can spend another two weeks with their families."
As mentioned, Vingegaard will once again target the Tour de France in 2024. This time however, a new foe has emerged in his former teammate, Primoz Roglic. "Jonas has had a fantastic year, so we expect a lot from him again. He is one of the favourites for the Tour de France," Maassen previews confidently. "We hope to win it again, but that won't be easy with this opposition."
"It will be strange to race against Roglic," Maassen admits, but he feels the team's new additions have more than made up for the absence of the Slovenian. "Cian Uijtdebroeks is very motivated. He will race with Vingegaard in O Gran Camiño and the Itzulia Basque Country. And we also expect a lot from newcomer Matteo Jorgenson. Jonas will be happy that they joined us."
