Nice turn of speed from @WarrenBarguil who gets up for a fine 6️⃣th place in the reduced sprint after Fisher-Black takes the win with a late attack.👌🏻 #KeepChallenging #MuscatClassic🇴🇲
Opening his 2024 season at the Muscat Classic in Oman, Warren Barguil put in a solid performance, just missing out on the podium in 6th position.
“It’s my first race of the year and it’s nice to be back with the team," the Frenchman reflects in his post-race interview with the official website of Team DSM-Firmenich PostNL, having made his return to the team he previously starred for between 2012 and 2017, taking notable victories such as two Tour de France stage wins, the King of the Mountains jersey and two stages of the Vuelta a Espana.
"At the start of the day, we thought Tobias Lund Andresen could be an option at the finish but it went too hard on the climbs in the end," recaps the 32-year-old. "Then with Frank van den Broek and I we tried to follow the attacks. Frank did a really good job to follow a lot of the moves. On the last climb I then went full to follow in the bunch."
In the finale though, a late attack from UAE Team Emirates' Finn Fisher-Black saw the Kiwi take the win, despite the best effort of Barguil. "I tried to do the sprint from the front in the wheel of Coquard. In the end sixth place isn’t a crazy result but it’s also not bad, and it’s good to start racing again." he concludes his assessment.
