“If I can win Liege-Bastogne-Liege, he can too" - Adrie van der Poel has faith in son Mathieu's chances this Sunday

Liege-Bastogne-Liege winner back in 1988, Adrie van der Poel knows exactly what it takes to succeed in the Ardennes. As his Rainbow Jersey-wearing son, Mathieu van der Poel attempts to match his father this Sunday, Adrie has full faith.

“If I can win Liege-Bastogne-Liege, he can too," the 64-year-old Dutchman insists confidently in conversation with Het Nieuwsblad. “This race was not written for me, but I have always achieved good results. Mathieu's goal this spring was the Tour of Flanders, to win it in the jersey of the world champion. Just like Paris-Roubaix."

With scintillating solo victories at both the Tour of Flanders and Paris-Roubaix too, there's no question van der Poel is somewhere near his top form, despite a unusually quiet performance last weekend at the Amstel Gold Race.

“Mathieu has a better chance in Liège than in the Amstel Gold Race last Sunday,” Adrie van der Poel evaluates. “Back then everyone was just fixated on him. A number of good riders really missed the chance of a victory there because they were only concerned with him. Only Thomas Pidcock did well. There are more top players at the start in Liege, such as Tadej Pogacar. That is better for Mathieu, because then it is not just him who is being looked at."
