Remco Evenepoel broke out during stage 13 of the Vuelta a Espana but then bounced back the next day for an epic win and KOM classification lead. He now intends on keeping that all the way into Madrid.
“First and foremost, I want to get as many points as possible on the first two climbs," Evenepoel told VTM this morning ahead of the mythical Angliru stage. "After that we will see what the situation in the peloton is. If we notice that the riding is fast, we may have to adjust our tactics and wait for the group of favorites, so that we can still try to compete for a stage win.”
It is a very difficult day, but the pan-flat start not ideal for the formation of a breakaway. Evenepoel leads the classification with 71 points at the start of today's stage, Jonas Vingegaard is in second place with 41 points.
“If that doesn't work, it's gambling on tomorrow. If I can be there today and again tomorrow, it should be fine. The legs still feel 'ça va'. I've been able to save myself the past two days, so I should be fine. Although you never know in a Grand Tour.”
