Alberto Contador is the only cyclist who has managed to win on the Angliru twice in the Vuelta a Espana. The current Eurosport commentator has talked about the mythical summit before the riders face one of the key stages of the race.
The stage is short and has two first category passes before facing the Angliru, as Contador explains: "The riders will already arrive with sore legs after descending the difficult and dangerous Cordal. A descent known for crashes of great riders who have left their chances in the race. We will face 12 kilometers at 9.8% average gradient. The first five kilometers do not have high percentages, although it is true that there are some areas at 9%".
Contador, on his bike in the video you can see below, talks about the last 5.5 kilometers to the finish, where the toughest ramps begin: "At 5.5 km to the finish the first 20% ramps begin, where it is almost impossible to stand up if there is a little humidity on the road, the bike slips a lot".
The Cueña les Cabres, the brutal one-kilometer zone that has an average gradient of over 16% and a maximum percentage of 23.5%: "The last hard part comes in the Aviru, when you think it's all over with the Cueña les Cabres, it hurts a lot to get here (21% ramps). The last kilometer is flat, with some downhill, up to glory. After reaching the top, after overcoming the ramps, some rider will enjoy the glory".
