It was a treacherous day at the Tour Down Under on stage two, as the wind caused a lot of tension, and the likes of Alberto Bettiol and Michael Matthews had dramatic ends to their GC stints. The latter due to a mechanical, in which Magnus Sheffield was involved.
“I collided with a rider on the climb, which caused me to fall to the right. Matthews was sitting there at the time and we touched. I immediately apologized after the finish,” Sheffield told Velonews. The American had already crashed on stage one after finishing second in the opening prologue but couldn't stay upright once again on the third day of racing.
In the final ascent to Nettle Hill there was a lot of bumping in the peloton and Sheffield tumbled, bringing Michael Matthews down aswell. The Australian was a main favourite for the stage and overall classification, but having lost so much time in a crucial part of the stage, he could never get back to the peloton, and was emotional after a frustrating end to his GC hopes.
“Unfortunately this is part of the race, but it was really not my intention. I tried to say sorry and immediately started the conversation," Sheffield recalls, after the finish. He worked to try and bring the group of five escapees back, however without the desired success. Nevertheless, Sheffield remains in third place in the overall classification and is INEOS Grenadiers' best placed riders.
