Following his spectacular solo victory at Liège-Bastogne-Liège, Soudal - Quick-Step's Remco Evenepoel expressed his delight at having won the race whilst wearing the faced rainbow jersey.
“I now have that photo of a victory in the rainbow jersey,” said the 23-year-old immediately following his win in a post-race interview. “And that in a big race like Liège-Bastogne-Liège, great! I think it's really magical.”
Becoming the first man this century to win back-to-back editions of Liège-Bastogne-Liège, Evenepoel also was the first man in 37 years to win the race whilst wearing the world champions rainbow jersey. “It was not an easy race, especially with Jumbo-Visma's attacks,” he continues. “In the end, I was having a hard time. Everyone was glued to my wheel on the Redoute, but I stayed calm and followed the plan. I think I saved the most time on the part after the Redoute.”
Blowing everyone away on the Cote de la Redoute, Evenepoel's victory was assured relatively early and he was allowed to bask in his glory and celebrate his success. “I want to thank the team. They put on a great show right from the start. I am very proud of them. Enjoy in moderation. I have already consulted with my dietitian and I can eat fries right away.”
