Former Belgian champion and Tour de France stage winner passed away during a 1000-kilometer charity ride

Former professional cyclist Ludo Dierckxsens (60) passed away on Thursday afternoon in Dendermonde during a 1,000 km charity ride for Kom Op Tegen Kanker (Stand Up Against Cancer) organization. 
Dierckxens is said to have suddenly become unwell. He was immediately attended by race doctors who rode behind the peloton, however it was too late for the Belgian. "They immediately started resuscitation, but unfortunately Ludo could not be saved," is the information provided by the organization.
Ludo Dierckxsens was a successful pro cyclist in 1990s and 2000s. The absolute highlight of his career was a stage won at Tour de France in 1999 while wearing the tricolor of Belgian champion.
