"I knew Buitrago was gone as soon as he caught me" - Heartbreak again for Derek Gee with fourth second placed stage finish at the Giro d'Italia

It was heartbreak once again for Derek Gee on stage 19 at the Giro d'Italia. With just a time-trial and an expected bunch sprint to go, the Canadian is likely to finish the race with four 2nd places and two fourth-placed finishes.

"I just wanted to go in the break for the Ciclamino points so I could secure second," he revealed in a post-stage interview with Eurosport taken immediately following the stage finish. "I thought for sure it was a GC day and then I just had to try and wrap my head around going to the finish again. The legs were done."

Seen as he was in the break once again, Gee decided to attack. Leading up the final climb, Gee was eventually caught and passed but Santiago Buitrago with just 1.5km to go. "I knew Buitrago was gone as soon as he caught me, that acceleration was ridiculous."

"I didn't know where everyone else was, where the GC guys were so I just tried to pull to the line," he continues. "I think it's going to take a while to sink in I can't even wrap my head around it. I'm glad I've moved into second in the Azzura that's cool! If I'd stayed in the peloton I'd never win right."
