One of the stars of the 2023
Giro d'Italia,
Ben Healy wasn't able to take a second victory on stage 16. A consolation prize however, the
EF Education-EasyPost rider is the new King of the Mountains.
"I initially went for the stage victory," the Irishman revealed to Eurosport following the conclusion of stage 16. "However, we didn't get much space, there were some GC riders with us and so I didn't really believe in it anymore. After that, I concentrated on the points."
Although not necessarily a pure climber, Healy's repeated, impressive performances in the breakaway and his naturally attacking nature have ensured that he has been consistently picking up a good number of points.
“It was a really tough day and when we started the final climb I was completely shattered," continues the 22-year-old. "I took it easy after that, but still feel it now. The GC riders are having a hard time.” Healy leads his nearest rival, Davide Bais, by 20 points in the standings with Einer Rubio 47 behind and Thibaut Pinot 50 back.
