23-year old
Fred Wright rode a brilliant 2022 season, which had a 7th place at the
Tour of Flanders as a breakthrough. The same way as he did last year, the
Bahrain - Victorious rider rode a quiet spring until he got to the Ronde, this weekend finishing a respectable 8th place in a brutal race.
"Thanks to Kamil, who helped me into the bottom of Molenberg and that is where the move went with 100km to go. It was such a hard race so it was to be expected," Wright said in a post-race interview. ”I did the right thing being in that move, and they gave us way more time than last year, that same move. It was perfect." The Briton counter-attacked Kasper Asgreen's attack, in hopes of anticipating the big moves of the day. Unknowing at the time, that attack would actually put him in position to fight for the victory on the day.
"We got over the Koppenberg, and I thought I can try and get a result here. Cause that is the big worry, Koppenberg, being with the best guys, and you just hear it on the radio that they are 40 seconds, then 30 seconds. I don’t know what more I could have done," he described. It was a matter of surviving on the climbs, but Wright showed his best form up to now this year as he rode under the radar but very strongly.
He held his own throughout all of the ascents and worked together with the chasing group that battled for the final place in the podium. In the end he no longer had the legs to put on a strong sprint, but his performance in the day saw him holding on to an 8th place. As Matej Mohoric abandoned the race, Wright has retaken a somewhat leading position within Bahrain.
