Knibb had to stop three times and change bikes also on several occasions, putting in the spotlight the chaos of the race. Marta Lacha and Eugenia Bujak were among the riders in the hot seat, but this frequently changed as the last riders started their effort.
Lotte Kopecky crashed, but still took the hot seat after crossing the line, Elisa Longo Borghini lost 14 seconds to the Belgian whilst Ellen van Dijk also arrived but almost a minute down, losing her chances of an Olympic medal.
Grace Brown and
Chloé Dygert were clearly the strongest in the first intermediate point, as Brown won 5 seconds to the American and 20 on
Anna Henderson. But right after Dygert, like many others, crashed and lost valuable time. They were still in first and second place on the second intermediate but the difference was now of 51 seconds.
Juliette Labous beat Kopecky to the line; then
Anna Henderson took the lead but
Grace Brown took an entire 1:31 minutes on the Briton and confirmed her victory.
Chloé Dygert was the last to arrive at the finish, unable to hold her second place but finishing third nonetheless.
