Giro d'Italia's brutal time-trial at risk of cancellation

The Giro d'Italia is one of the most spectacular races of the year but unfortunately one that frequently gets affected by the weather. Stages are almost every year cancelled or cut, however it is a logistical problem that may see the race miss out on a novelty climb that is in the final time-trial.

The Monte Lussari is the final climb on the route of the 2023 Giro, headlining the time-trial on stage 20. It is an incredibly difficult climbs which features a 4.7-kilometer section at 15%, within a 7.3-kilometer final climb. The road is known to have rough pavement however it's uncertain it that was modified recently. However issues arise from the narrow road which will be used.

It was rumoured that the riders would not be able to descend back the climb after their effort and would need to come down the mountain by gondola. That seemed to be a resolved issue, and the fact that cars could not go up the climb also seemed to have been worked out as motorbikes could be used.

However it is said, in a report from Sporza, that there is an issue with that scenario too. Possibly, the motorbikes would not be able to get down the mountains. It is reported that the UCI has sent a letter to the race organizers and a meeting will be had tomorrow morning ahead of the race in order to look for a solution or make a decision on the possibility of running the stage. An alternative course may be used.
