Matteo Jorgenson was one of Team Visma | Lease a Bike's top signings of the past few years. In 2024 he won cobbled classics, high-level stage-races and supported Jonas Vingegaard at the Tour de France. In 2025 he returns to the Grand Boucle with the same goal, but a higher level, as told to CyclingUpToDate and various other medias at the team's press confernece.
The American rider joined Jonas Vingegaard and team DS Grischa Niermann this Friday morning in Lille to discuss the team's ambitions, his role within an incredibly strong lineup for the Dutch team, his current form and the cards the team can use against UAE Team Emirates - XRG throughout the race.
Question: Your part for the Tour de France is mainly building position, do you want to be in GC as well?
Answer: The main goal is to help Jonas for sure. I think in doing that it will help me be good in GC but I'm here to help Jonas win.
Q: Going back to your GC role and talking about your contract extension. Will it be a learning process for a future GC leadership here, maybe next year in a Grand Tour?
A: Every Grand Tour I do is a learning experience, this one specially I think, learning from Jonas. Doing a Grand Tour without GC in mind, without the same pressure Jonas has is helpful. But it's all in mind with the goal of winning the Tour.
Q: Does it make it harder for you to stay in GC and take care of Jonas?
A: Quite a bit easier I would say than being in Jonas' position. I have less expectation, I can focus on my job and once my job is done go to the line as fast as I can.
Q: Jonas says he's in the best shape he's ever been, how do you compare your form to last year's Tour?
A: I think same, I'm also in the best shape that I've found in my life, it's hard to know until you get to the race but at the Dauphiné I think I felt better than last year but the field was so different, this year a stronger startlist but basically I feel better than last year.
Q: Where do you see the strength in your team compared to UAE?
A: I think we have a classics team actually with a few climbers along for the ride. i think that's the key to this Tour de France, it's getting through these first 10 days, treating them like classics and taking advantage there. Once we get to mountains it will be more simple but for me our strength lies in our ability to ride one-day races together and be in position together.
Q: We've seen before that the strategy within Visma is you play a lot of cards in the mountains. Will you try to make the mountain stages your way? Will it be a problem if you don't have many climbers?
A: I would say we have plenty climbers still, definitely with Sepp, Simon, me and Jonas we can make a lot happen in the mountains.
