GC favourite Elisa Longo Borghini won't race the Tour de France Femmes after a training fall leaves her unfit to start

Elisa Longo Borghini will not participate in the Tour de France Femmes (August 12-18). The Italian champion, who won the Giro d'Italia Women earlier this summer, fell during training and will therefore not participate in the Tour.

"Unfortunately, I will not be at the start of the Tour de France Femmes due to the consequences of a fall in training," Longo Borghini writes on X. "There are no fractures, but I left a lot of skin on the asphalt and I can’t ride my bike at the moment. I’m very disappointed that I won’t be able to fight for a great Tour for Lidl-Trek together with my teammates. Good luck, ladies!"

Longo Borghini was seen as one of the most dangerous challengers to defending champion Demi Vollering. The 32-year-old rider is having an excellent season. Not only did she win the Giro d'Italia Women, she was also third in both the Vuelta Espana Femenina and Tour de Suisse Women.

In 2022, she arrived sixth overall at the French Grand Tour while last year she didn't reach the conclusion of the race either as she had to abandon ahead of the penultimate stage from provisional podium.
