Although Israel - Premier Tech came to the Tour de France with the ultimate goal of getting a stage win, Jakob Fuglsang was expected to ride for the overall classification after a strong third place at the Tour de Suisse where he showed he was back at his best level. However at Planche des Belles Filles those ambitions vanished.
Purposefully though, as Fuglsang told TV2 Sport: "It was to throw some time. There was no reason to have come through and then thrown half a minute. Then it was better to throw five minutes. Then there is a slightly greater opportunity to get into an breakaway," he said.
Having revealed the GC is no longer his ambition, he rode the final climb calmly so as to gain the freedom necessary to be let into breakaways and not be chased down. The team has already succeeded when Simon Clarke sprinted to the win in Arenberg, and with Michael Woods joining Fuglsang in attacking the mountainous stages, chances are good for the Israeli team.
"I do not think there was any reason to chase the GC, the way I am racing and as the team is," he admits. "Then it's easier to get into breakaways and maybe gain some time by it. Then I can see where I stand in the last week instead of fighting alone with all the other teams," the veteran concluded.
