Former Tour de France winner Greg LeMond diagnosed with leukemia

Former professional cyclist Greg LeMond has announced in a statement on his website that he has been diagnosed with leukemia. On June 2, LeMond revealed the news on his own website. He assured the leukemia is curable and not fatal.

“The purpose of this statement is to let you know I have been diagnosed with Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia, Fortunately, it is a type of cancer that is treatable, and it is a type of leukemia that is not life-threatening or debilitating," he said.

He described the process of how the illness was discovered, but has assured that treatment has quickly begun: "My doctors and I have decided on a treatment which will begin this week. I should be feeling better in a few weeks and for the near future, my daily schedule will be altered only a little and I have been told that in a few months, I should be in remission."

Lemond is one of the most influencial and most successful riders in the history of American cycling. He has three Tour de France titles to his name alongside two World championships and many other important titles which have launched him into an eternal place on cycling books. He regularly features on news outlets and TV broadcasts as an analyst.

"The long-term prognosis is very favorable. I am fortunate to have a great team of doctors and the full support of my family, friends and colleagues at LeMond Bicycles.” he assured. “I will keep everyone updated about my health and treatments in the months ahead but for now, I believe I couldn’t be in better hands. I am excited about our plans ahead and I look forward to updating you all along the way.”
