INEOS Grenadiers has performed very strongly on stage 8 of the
Giro d'Italia where they have taken very positive steps in the fight for the overall classification, but the less of
Filippo Ganna was meaningful. The Italian has given a few words of disappointment over the situation.
"I'm really sorry, I hope to recover quickly and get back to competition. I wish my teammates good luck. It's not one of my best moments, but that's life," Ganna said in a video shared by INEOS. "I hope I can celebrate in Rome the end of the Giro d'Italia with my teammates."
He was forced to leave the race before the start of the stage after having tested positive for Covid-19. It is something which puts the team at risk of further cases, however his loss alone is already meaningful firstly as he misses the time-trial this afternoon where he'd be one of the main favourites, but then also because of the support he would be able to provide the team in the coming weeks.
Ganna finished second in the opening time-trial but hasn't shown his best legs since. He now faces more questions regarding his next goals, but most likely he will take some rest before beginning the preparation for the World Championships, with the Tour de France being an unlikely destination due to the lack of a suitable time-trial.
