Elisa Longo Borghini won't be competing in the upcoming La Vuelta Femenina, she announced on social media, saying she had contracted an "aggressive stomach bug".
The Italian veteran started the season strongly, winning the UAE Tour, but missed Italian races after catching COVID-19 and according to her words, she spent 10 days in bed while sick. The string of illnesses has not yet stopped, with the Trek - Segafredo rider now having to miss out on one of the main races of the spring.
The Italian was on strong form in Liège-Bastogne-Liège recently, where she finished second behind Demi Vollering, who won all three Ardennes Classics. The American team will nevertheless be able to contest for the overall classification with the likes of Gaia Realini and Amanda Spratt whilst Lizzie Deignan races her first stage-race since the 2021 Women's Tour.
