So close! @eliaviviani sprints to second at #VCV2022 as Jacobsen takes the victory on stage 5. Overall, @_rccarlos rounds off a consistent week with a fantastic third 🥉on GC 🙌🙌🙌
The Italian sprinter has made a move back to INEOS Grenadiers and has started off the season with quality sprints, but without a win...
"It was perfect, [Ben] Swifty and Tao [Geoghegan Hart] did an amazing job in the final, always keeping me covered and in good position. When I saw a perfect leadout from Morkov I tried to go over him and really challenge Jakobsen but yeah he was the strongest," Viviani said in a post-race interview with CyclingPro.
After a couple of complicated 2020 where he failed to get any win he bounced back last year to win several times throughout the year, albeit outside of WorldTour competitions. Over the years Elia Viviani has been one of the riders protected by the Quick-Step leadout, however now that he's on the other side he's face-to-face with the beast himself.
"Swifty is doing a really amazing job. All the team worked well, I did second, third and fourth, I missed the only position that's important, we keep trying for next week."
With the UAE Tour and Tirreno-Adriatico looming closely on the horizon, the 32-year old sprinter will find more opportunities to get his first World Tour win since 2019.
