Despite what is currently a positive prognostic, the Colombian faces an unknown period of recovery as he completes his 7th successful surgery.
Egan Bernal suffered a training accident on the 24th of January but seems to be on an upward trajectory as it comes to his recovery. Bernal reportedly rode into a bus that had stopped to let off passengers. The Colombian, who was on a team training camp with several of his teammates, did not see the vehicle and crashed into the back of the bus of a speed of around 60kph.
In social media the news quickly spread and the rumours of his injuries went far and wide. The consequences ended up being worst than initially thought as Bernal said himself: "I nearly lost my life doing what I love the most".
As he explained on his most recent Instagram post, the injuries he was faced with are the following: 11 broken ribs, broken femur, broken kneecap, fractures in the T5 and T6 vertebras, fractures odontoids, fractured metacarpar, a broken thumb, the loss of a tooth and perforation in both lungs.
It is too early to speculate how long his recovery period will be and if he will make a return to the peloton, at the moment all the focus in his providing him with the necessary medical treatment that will allow him to keep living a normal life.
