With very little knowledge yet on the possibility of a return to professional cycling, one thing is certain and that is that Egan Bernal is ready to work for what would be an historic comeback.
"I want to come back, it's what I love the most. I'm a cyclist, I feel like if I'm not on a bike I wouldn't know what to do... In this moment I feel like a cyclist, I feel like a sports person and to me the bike is my lifestyle."
It has been 28 days since his accident in Colombia today, Egan Bernal has in the meantime gone through an incredible recovery period where he was able to resume his life with relative normality, in comparison to what could've been. On an interview with Revista Semana, he talked about his accident, the time he spent in the hospital and how he seems himself as an athlete at the moment.
"I don't know if I will ever be back at the level of winning a Tour de France because it is hard... Obviously I will work to reach that level," Bernal said, confirming that he has got the ambition to return to the peloton and the level he had that saw him take wins at the Tour de France and Giro d'Italia.
"When I have an injury, or some sort of thing, I feel like I can be a bit more focused and that's what I want, and want to point towards."
Being asked about how his training for the Tour was doing, he answered "I was training very well... I felt strong, more recovered from the problem I had in the back, fast in the time-trial, and was happy... When I enjoy, I feel like I can go a bit better, that's how I felt."
On the last few weeks the Colombian has shared several videos since being at home where he was visible walking, resuming an exercise routine and performing several movements which lead to believe his mobility is on the path to full functionality. There is no date set on a possible return to the bike.
