Dylan Teuns denied opportunity to defend his Fleche Wallone title after bout of flu

Reigning La Fleche Wallone winner, Dylan Teuns has been denied the opportunity to defend his title after suffering a bout of flu that has proved incredibly persistant.

“The fever had already subsided on Sunday, but he doesn't feel really fit. Cycling was not included so far. In the given circumstances, there is no point in racing,” Sports Director at Israel - Premier Tech Rik Verbrugghe, a former Fleche Wallone winner in his own right from back in 2001, told Het Nieuwsblad. “Getting him back to 100% health is our number one priority right now.”

Teuns edged out Movistar's Alejandro Valverde twelve months ago for one of the biggest wins of his career. This year however, the Israel - Premier Tech rider has found success a lot more difficult to come by with this being his latest disappointment.

“He is disappointed and that is not surprising. These were his big goals, the races in which he wanted to perform well," continues Verbrugghe. "But if you are or have been ill, it is difficult to make something of it. You can't expect top performances from someone who is sick or injured. We are now going to try to prepare Dylan as best as possible for the next part of the season."
