Torstein Traeen came to his first Tour de France with high ambitions after a Top10 in the Criterium du Dauphiné, however they were largely broken as he was the first rider to crash into the opening day. He has been diagnosed a fracture in an elbow, but continues on the race.
Unlike Enric Mas and Richard Carapaz who could not start the second stage after a difficult downhill crash, Traeen has not been forced to leave the race. Despite the fracture in the elbow he managed to finish the stage, not too far from the front, and will continue, the team confirmed.
“Torstein slept well and also responded well to the latest treatments. We also let him do some tests on the bike this morning and he managed to complete them without any problems," Uno-X said this morning. "Although there is still some discomfort, we are happy that he can start today. We will keep an eye on him during the stage."
Traeen's GC goals have most likely evaporated, he will instead hope to recover, in time to be able to fight for stage wins in the second and third week, alongside the likes of Tobias Johannessen and Rasmus Tiller.
