The breakaway of the day was made out of four riders who escaped already halfway through the day. The wind made it tense in the peloton. Marta Romeu, Miryam Maritza Nuñes, Valentina Basilico and Antri Christoforou. The group enjoyed a maximum of a minute's lead, but only survived until 32 kilometers to go.
The likes of Carina Schrempf and Katrine Aalerud, who headlined yesterday's stage, hit the deck in the run-up to the final climb. Team SD - Worx ProTime took up the responsibility and hit the final climb with Lorena Wiebes and Marlen Reusser.
Demi Vollering attacked with kilometer to go and she did not take passengers. Initially, Évita Muzic and
Karlijn Swinkels managed to match the acceleration but the Dutch champion continued to pace all the way to the finish line and ultimately managed to land a solo win.
Vollering arrived to the finish 4 seconds to Muzic whilst Swinkels was 10 seconds behind. Bigger damage was to the other pre-stage favourite Elise Chabbey who shed 13 seconds on the line. The likes of Silvia Persico, Liane Lippert and Shirin van Anrooij lost 19 seconds on the road.
With two stages left to go, Vollering has now jumped into the race lead. After winning La Vuelta Femenina and Itzulia Women, the climber is now in pole-position to win the overall classification here. Whilst stage 3 is expected to end in a bunch sprint, the fourth stage of the race will most likely see a lot of GC action as the riders find the hardest climb of the entire event close to the finish.
