Brandon McNulty has had a season full of ups and down but this Wednesday in Charleston, West Virginia, he managed to
win the time-trial national championships of the USA and has virtually confirmed his presence in the
Olympic Games. That is, because USA Cycling is using the nationals as a big springboard for the selection of the races in Paris this summer.
“Yeah, it’s definitely big, I’m super happy. It's always special to win a National Title, but this one had a bit more importance to qualify for the Olympics. This is a big one for me," McNulty said in words shared with
USA Cycling. At the podium, he was given a cheque with the writing 'boarding pass Paris 2024', a rather unique reward for a victory that the
UAE Team Emirates rider took after a busy spring.
The American won the time-trial with almost a minute over his closest competitor Tyler Stites, in the 33-kilometer long route. This does not mean he is the best rider against the clock that the nation has but his presence is virtually sealed - with his victory at the UAE Tour coming as another very big argument. The USA will have two spots available and it is expected that the other will be filled by INEOS Grenadiers rider Magnus Sheffield.
“I’m super happy to win another nationals . It was a big goal for me this year, especially with it being important for selection for the Olympics," McNulty said in words shared by UAE Team Emirates.
"I was a bit nervous because After Romandie I had a lot of fatigue from the long season so far. It was a really straightforward course with no hills or turns so it was just suffering on the pedals for 40 minutes. It’s really nice to take another win and now my next TT objective will be for the Olympics.”
McNulty will try to take the double and this Sunday will be a headliner in the 212-kilometer long road race.
