Excitement was in the air at
Strade Bianche Donne, with a thrilling finish and even a horse on the course.
Team SD Worx’s rider
Demi Vollering emerged victorious, edging out
Lotte Kopecky in the final sprint.
"I was surprised by her action, but that made it a lot of fun," she said, hinting towards Kopecky's action in the final sprint. The duo collaborated to catch up with
Kristen Faulkner, who was leading by nearly a minute ahead of the peloton.
The final kilometre saw the duo catch up with the American rider and then leave her behind to secure two podium spots. “We were pretty sure we would get her back, that climb doesn't lie. Lotte and I did a really good job together, so we knew we could save some energy for that climb.”
The teammates opted for a fair competition and decided to determine the winner through traditional methods. Vollering came out on top with a narrow victory over Kopecky. "We are both good climbers, but it was exciting. This means an incredible amount to me, I think it is one of the most beautiful races. In recent years I worked a lot for teammates, but now the team - and Chantal van den Broek-Blaak in particular - gave me faith. That helped me a lot to start this match,” Vollering concluded.
